Fiddle Tune/Guitar Back Up Workshop

Description:  MSFA is sponsoring a workshop for fiddlers and guitar players who back them up.  We'll learn an old-time tune from AJ, and Rina will demonstrate the back up - then we'll put this all together. The event will be on Zoom; a "pre lesson tune" and links will be emailed out before the event.

Instructors: AJ Srubas is a Minneapolis based fiddle player and teacher specializing in old-time and bluegrass. Rina Rossi plays guitar and bass. They have been involved in MBOTMA for many years, most recently having led the August old-time instructional camp with their band Steam Machine.

Fun With Banjos

Description: Fun With Banjos is intended to entertain audiences as it provides banjoists with insights about banjo playing. In the workshop, Phil will play and sing a wide variety of songs and tunes, and comment on the songs and instrumental techniques used to play them. The session provides laughs as well as appreciation for the breadth of banjo moods and styles, and inspires players to create original banjo breaks and compositions.

Instructor: Phil Nusbaum is known locally as the host of “Bluegrass Saturday Morning,” heard weekly 7AM-12 noon on KBEM-FM (www.jazz88.fm; 88.5). Phil holds the PhD in Folklore from Indiana University and has contributed to the scholarly literature about folk music. Phil has recorded two CDs featuring his banjo compositions and arranging, and has been part of many others. He is an experienced banjo workshop leader and instructor. Currently, Phil performs with the Double Down Daredevils. John Bergquist will accompany on the bass. Phil will lead a 2-day workshop regarding creating breaks and composing instrumental music at the MN Bluegrass & Old-Time Music Fall Jam, 2021.

Instruments/style: Everyone is welcome to this workshop that is intended to be entertaining and informative. Players, particularly banjoists will enjoy hearing Phil’s experience-based and philosophical notions about bluegrass and the banjo.

YOU Can Play the Melody to a Song on Your Ukulele - Trust Me!

Description: In jams and in concerts we hear the performers playing the melody to a song or tune. We will examine how they (YOU!) can do that. While this session will be teaching this for GCEA tuned ukuleles, the concept works exactly the same on other instruments, like guitar and mandolin. In an easy step by step manner, we’ll work on the C scale using TAB. Then we’ll graduate to the complex bluegrass/old-time song Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, followed by the Flatt and Scruggs song, I’m Waiting to Hear You Call Me Darling.

Instructor: Tony Anthonisen is the organizer and a leader of the Twin Cities Ukulele Club. He teaches many ukulele lessons and workshops locally, as well as teaching ukulele at the Steve Kaufman Acoustic Kamp. Tony has led hundreds of bluegrass, old-time and roots music jams on the guitar, mandolin and ukulele. He is a teacher who strongly believes that lessons and jamming should be encouraging and rewarding for all, not "trials by fire.” If it is not fun, why would you do it?

Before the workshop: go to https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCevGQlbewuJFqnEt6Xs9GpQ/playlists and watch the videos.

Once at YouTube, go to the MBOTMA Ukulele Workshop Playlist. View the videos in a 1 through 6 order.

Unlocking Improvisation with Modes

Description: Stuck in a rut with improvisation? Don’t know where to begin? This workshop can help!  Each note in a scale has its own “mood.” We’ll get to know each note like a new friend by selecting a limited number of them to see how they react to the backing chords. We’ll explore the scales and modes that are common in bluegrass to get you improvising in new ways.

Instructor: Brian Wicklund is a top fiddle and mandolin teacher in the US and has written best-selling series, American Fiddle Method published by Mel Bay.  He has taught hundreds of camps and workshops in the US, Canada, UK, and Scandinavia and toured worldwide with an array of bluegrass and Americana bands.  He fronts the Minnesota-based, Barley Jacks, runs fiddle instructional website americanfiddlemethod.com and hosts his own music camps.

Instruments/style: This class is open to anyone who can play or sing a major scale on any instrument.
